Says the man who held an anti-Valentine's party for how many years? Just because you're playing for the other team, doesn't mean that people are wrong about how saccharine and affected this Hallmark Holiday can feel to a lot of people.

Edited to add: I don't begrude anyone their love or happiness or expressions thereof, I just get very sick of the retail aspects of of Valentine's Day.

My Blackhearts party was FUN! And it made the day better for everyone involved!

I'm certainly not defending the commercialism (I still can't believe I saw Xmas decorations up before Hallowe'en) but really, there's a BIG difference between feeling low about the day and lashing out at everyone who doesn't want to dynamite Cupid, right?

I'm sure I'm with any number of others in this, but my grudge with the day isn't the celebration of love but rather the rampant commercialism that become associated with the act. Apparently I'm not really loving someone unless I *buy* them something. This artifical connection rather devalues our feelings, stating that there is a quantifiable amount which sufficiently expresses our devotion to each other. It is this act, this captialistic social convention, which I detest.

Scorching hot monkey sex is way better than any card, candy, or semi-precious stone in my opinion.

I woke up this morning to the sound of rain on the roof (and I love that sound!) We went to bed last night in a wet sticky pile of body parts and repeated that this morning as the rain fell.

Get your mind out of the gutter - it was just the two of us, unless you count the cat siting on the headboard, staring at us.

Nearly 30 years and we still light each other's fire and for that I say "Lord, Hallelujah!!!"

First commercialism does suck, but Jesus on a surfboard, it's around all the time for EVERYTHING. Don't begrudge the VD because there are ads for it. The media pressures us in so many ways, we just need to learn to filter that out. Whether it's what kind of food to eat, how to dress our children, our dogs and our homes- of course *they* will want us to buy stuff to show the people we care how much we care.

But I just don't think being a hater based on the consumer culture of our country is acceptable. I love Christmas, and Halloween and all those holidays- not because I love to buy shit or spend money (though I do love to give gifts), but because I love any excuse to dress up, dress up my house, cook a huge dinner, spend time with family and friends and free candy (in the case of Halloween).

So I know I am preaching to the choir.

And for the part about lovey dovey- YAY! For the lovers in the world, and for those who aren't or don't have any, it doesn't mean that aren't LOVED by someone somewhere, even if it's a cat or a guinea pig! I am all about the "polyvalentamorous" lifestyle. Sure, Gordon's my main heart on, but I have tons of others in my life I adore and want to share the love with too! (YOU among them!)

So yea, embrace the pink and the red. Treat yourself special (because everyone's first and formost valentine should be themselves!) and bask in the fact that there will be tons of chocolate and goofy stuffed animals half priced tomorrow!

Well, you already know you are preaching to the choir with me. I have had many reason's to hate Valentine's Day - as a florist it can be the single most stressful, painful, exhausting and damaging day to your business. As a pastry chef/chocolate maker - much the same. And yet, how can you hate a day that is set aside for saying "I love you"

Perhaps if the haters would get off their collective asses and go out and show some love to the world, they might have someone to celebrate the rest of the year with.

My mother's best friend was the sole florist on the island I grew up on, and had four days a year that were hellish, work-wise. (Of course you know them: VD, Easter, Mother's Day, and Thanksgiving) I used to fill the car up with arrangements and drive frantically around trying to get them all delivered on time!
